How the ETIAS Works With a Passport

By 2021, Europe plans to have its European Traveler Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) up and running. This system requires travelers to apply for and obtain a visa waiver before they can travel to the Schengen Zone of mainland Europe. It will keep travelers safer by disallowing travel by people who may be dangerous or who may have been exposed to dangerous diseases.

One of the best things about the new ETIAS system is that it is entirely electronic.

The ETIAS Links Automatically to a Traveler’s Passport

Travelers will need their passports to apply for an ETIAS. They will not only have to enter information exactly as it appears on their passport, but they will have to use their passport number. These numbers are now tied to microchips embedded in the passports. Scanning these automatically gives Immigration offices the traveler’s passport number and other data.

Once the ETIAS visa waiver is granted, it will also be tied to the passport number and will be available for European officials to see as soon as they scan the passport.

This makes travel so much easier than it has been in the past! Travelers used to have to carry their travel documentation with them, printed out from the internet or even issued directly from a consulate or embassy. Even when visas were required, the traveler would have to send his or her physical passport away, wait for the visa to be stamped inside it, then carry the passport with them when they traveled.

Now, most of that paperwork has been eliminated! Now, travelers only need to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver to Europe, wait for it to be granted, and scan their passport upon arrival in Europe. The visa waiver approval will automatically come up and they will be allowed to enter the Schengen Zone. It’s literally that easy!

Travel is Easy with the ETIAS Visa Waiver

The ETIAS visa waiver makes travel easy in other ways, too. Here are just a few of them:

  • The entire application, payment, and approval process takes place online.
  • Applying for an ETIAS visa waiver only takes most people 10-15 minutes.
  • Most travelers receive instant visa waiver approval. Everyone should hear back within 2 weeks.
  • The ETIAS visa waiver is good for up to three years or until the traveler’s current passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • The ETIAS permits travel for up to 90 consecutive days at a time. This should be plenty of time to conduct business or be a tourist.
  • Once in Europe, travelers can move between countries in the Schengen Zone without needing further permission of any kind.
  • Travelers can always enter through the same city, making it easy to get to know an airport, etc.

The ETIAS visa waiver makes travel to Europe easy and safer than ever. Travelers only need to apply for and obtain ETIAS travel permission. That visa waiver is linked to their passport so they don’t need to carry anything else with them.
